12-Year-Old Boy Struck and Killed on Long Island, Driver Arrested

A man is under arrest for driving with a suspended license after police say he struck and killed a 12-year-old boy Thursday morning on Long Island.

The boy, a seventh-grader at Memorial Junior High School, was struck at the intersection of South Franklin Avenue and West Merrick Road in Valley Stream just before 7:30 a.m., police said. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Though police said there was no criminality involved in the accident, the driver, 29-year-old Austin Soldano of Seaford, was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license.

In a statement, Valley Stream schools superintendent said the district was "extremely saddened" by the student's passing. Grief counselors were being made available to students and school staff.
