A high school student has been arrested after a 10-year-old boy was shot to death in New Jersey, police said.
The 16-year-old suspect was arrested by detectives at Neptune High School on Thursday, according to police. The school was temporarily placed on lockdown while he was removed from a classroom.
Police said they believe the student was the accomplice of a gunman who fired several shots into an Asbury Park home full of children late Wednesday, killing the young boy and injuring his 39-year-old mother.
The gunman remains on the loose, police said.
The 16-year-old was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The child's mother, who was shot in her leg, was treated and released from a hospital.
Video from the scene shows several evidence markers on the street in front of a home on Ridge Avenue.
Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said Thursday night that authorities believe someone else in the home was the intended target.
The names of the victims have not been released. The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office will determine a motive in the shooting.
