Long Island School District Warns Parents After Stranger Grabs 10-Year-Old Girl Walking to Class

A little girl was able to fight off a man who tried to grab her on her way to her Long Island elementary school Wednesday, police say, but the apparent abduction attempt prompted the district to send a cautionary letters to parents. 

The 10-year-old girl was walking to the Drexel Avenue Elementary School in Westbury around 9:15 a.m. when an unknown man sneaked up from behind and grabbed her arm, officials say.

The girl was able to break free from the man, believed to be in his 30s. She ran away and hid until the suspect fled, police said.

She then ran to the school and reported what had happened.

The 10-year-old girl was not injured, according to police.

The man, who never said a word, was wearing an orange shirt, shorts and boots at the time he grabbed the girl, police said.

Authorities released a sketch of the man (above) Thursday morning.
