Health officials closed one Long Island beach for swimmers on Saturday due to high bacteria levels and announced the closing of 18 others because of heavy rainfall.
Heavy rain increases stormwater runoff, which can increase bacteria levels.
The Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing was closed because of elevated bacteria levels, the Nassau County Health Department said.
In addition, health officials have closed 13 north shore and five south shore beaches in Nassau County:
North shore beaches:

- Creek Club – Lattingtown
- Lattingtown Beach – Lattingtown
- Laurel Hollow Beach – Laurel Hollow
- Morgan Sound – Glen Cove
- North Hempstead Beach Park – Port Washington
- Piping Rock Beach Club – Locust Valley
- Pryibil Beach – Glen Cove
- Ransom Beach – Bayville
- Theodore Roosevelt Beach – Oyster Bay
- Sea Cliff Village Beach – Sea Cliff
- Soundside Beach – Bayville
- Stehli Beach – Bayville
South shore beaches:
- Biltmore Beach Club – Massapequa
- Hewlett Point Beach – East Rockaway
- Island Park Beach – Island Park
- Merrick Estates Civic Association – Merrick
- Philip Healey Beach – Massapequa
