6 Shot at Queens Reunion Party

One person was killed and five others injured when shots rang out during a junior high school reunion party in Queens.

The mayhem erupted around 2:15 a.m. outside a Springfield Gardens home on 182nd Street and 145th Drive . About 200 people were attending the IS 238-grad party, which then became a larger block party, police sources said.

It's unclear when the violence erupted, but a 20-year-old man identified as Dane Freeman was found dead on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his head, police said.  Freeman was from Cambria Heights, police said.

The five wounded include two men, ages 25 and 21, who were each shot in the leg; a 23-year-old man who was shot in back; a 22-year-old woman shot in the shoulder; and a 21-year-old woman who was shot in both hands. All five of them are in stable condition.

There have been no arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.

State Senator Malcolm Smith came to the scene and urged a strong response to tackling the violence. "There are too many guns on the street," he said. "We've got to do something to get the guns out of people's hands," he added.

The shootings were the second incident of random gun violence in the area in the past week.  Last Saturday, an 18-year-old man, Kendrick Ali Morrow, was shot and killed outside a club for youths on 147th Avenue and 176th Street.  Morrow's father, Sha'heed Mohammed, came to the scene of the reunion party shooting this morning.

"He was destined to go to St. Johns University, as an academic scholarship and now he's gone because of senseless violence. We gonna fight back to get our children and our community. We gonna fight back."

Police said a connection between these shootings seems unlikely, but all avenues are being pursued.
