Cancer Center Honors News Anchor With Courage Award

Robin Roberts, co-anchor of ABC's Good Morning America and a breast cancer survivor, earns the Gilda Radner Courage Award

Robin Roberts, co-anchor of ABC's Good Morning America and a breast cancer survivor, is this year's recipient of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute's Gilda Radner Courage Award.

Named for the late comedian, the award recognizes cancer patients whose public battles give hope to others and focus public attention on the disease. Roberts -- who was diagnosed in 2007 -- shared her personal treatment experience with millions of television viewers.

In accepting the award in Buffalo Saturday, Roberts credited her former colleague, film-critic Joel Siegel, who died of colon cancer in 2007, with making her more cancer aware, which enabled her to detect her cancer early.

"Because of his passion, I did it," she said. "I found out I had cancer and was able to handle it."
