Abortion's Psychological Effects Spark Debate

The American Psychological Association recently reported findings from a panel investigating the psychological effects of abortion. Brenda Major, the panel's chairwoman, issued a statement saying “the best scientific evidence published indicates that among adult women who have an unplanned pregnancy, the relative risk of mental health problems is no greater if they have a single elective, first-trimester abortion or deliver that pregnancy.”

Today the APA came under fire by the Family Research Council. FRC president Tony Perkins called the APA's selection process and criteria "enormously biased" and believes it was designed to fit a "pro-abortion agenda," according to the Associated Press.

The effects may remain uncertain for a long time, but what is certain is that this debate will not wrap up tidily.
