The Addams Family Really is a Scream in Chicago

A new musical based on the ooky family set to debut next year

They're creepy, and they're kooky, mysterious, and spooky. And they're on their way to Chicago.

A new musical based on The Addams Family will have its pre-Broadway tryout at the Oriental Theatre starting November 13, 2009. The official Chicago opening will be in early December 2009, and the show is expected to hit Broadway in spring 2010.

The show features a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice along with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. The musical is based not on the '60s television show, but rather on the cartoons of Charles Addams. The artist's grisly versions of the American family are witty and interestingly creepy, quite a bit darker than their on-screen counterparts.

Casting has not been announced yet, but Nathan Lane (as Gomez) and Bebe Neuwirth (as Morticia) were involved in readings this summer.

"This is a story about things common to all families, and various rites of passage," lead producer (and Chicago resident) Stuart Oken told the Chicago Sun-Times. "We envision it as a classic Broadway musical comedy—literate and theatrical, with a score that has everything from hilarious to touching ballads, to Broadway vaudeville, to real love songs and relationship songs."
