No one expected the most bizarre moment of the elections in New York to come out of Long Island, which hasn't grabbed many headlines this cycle.
But a campaign volunteer for Democratic New York State Senator Brian Foley has filed a police report claiming he was shot in the leg with a pellet gun while putting out campaign signs Monday night, according to Suffolk County Police.
Police are investigating but there's no clear evidence this shooting occurred, a department spokesperson said. Investigators are now checking specifically for any surveillance video that captured the shooting.
The claim was first made public to NBCNewYork by Senator Foley himself, who said it was evidence of campaign passions gone too far.
"TheTea Party has been very active in my opponent's campaign and has undertaken many underhanded tactics," said Foley.
The campaign of Foley's opponent, Republican Lee Zeldin, condemned the inciden -- but criticized Foley for not focusing on election issues.
"My opponent has tried very hard to change the discussion from substantive issues to something unrelated and the voters reject that," countered Zeldin.
Recent polls have shown Zeldin, a Smithtown lawyer, with a lead over incumbent Foley, who is seeking his second term in Albany.
With Democrats holding only a two seat lead in New York's Senate, the outcome of this race could determine control of that state legislative body.
