Hawaii police said they have arrested and charged a New York couple for violating coronavirus quarantine rules.

Andrew McLeod, 25, and Kadijah Wills, 26, were arrested on Thursday and charged with six counts of rules and orders violations, including falsification to law enforcement, the Maui Police Department said.

Police said McLeod and Wills arrived in Maui on Wednesday. The two were screened at Kahului Airport and indicated that their quarantine location would be at a Lahaina resort. They were instructed to travel directly to their hotel for their mandatory 14-day quarantine, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

But the two were seen inside a Kahului grocery store and did not travel directly to their hotel. Officers learned that McLeod and Wills did not check in to their resort.

Police then contacted Wills over the phone and she said the couple had checked in to a Wailea resort, then hung up. Police checked with the Wailea resort and learned that the couple had been there but checked out and were attempting to check into another area resort. Officers tracked the couple down and detained them at 4100 Wailea Alanui Drive.

McLeod and Wills’ bail has been set at $14,000 each. Both remained in police custody as of Friday. It wasn’t immediately clear if they had been assigned a public defender or retained other legal representation.
