Spring Break Staycations

Don't forget free, local treasures at area museums like MoMa

Airfares have dropped a bit since last spring, but hotel rates have plummeted. So now's the time to plan a staycation if you'd like to get "away" for Spring Break.

Genevieve Shaw Brown, Senior Editor at Travelocity, says their new "Local Getaways" section lists hotels, tours, and events to make you feel like you're on vacation....while staying right here in the Big Apple. She says "many four-star hotels can be had for under $200 a night."

The Millenium Hilton, at 55 Church Street in Lower Manhattan, has standard room rates at $159 or less throughout March and into April.

The Shoreham Hotel, at 33 West 55th Street in Midtown Manhattan, is offering rates from $178 a night.

If you are staying in town this spring, don't forget local treasures like the MoMa, where admission is free on Friday nights.

The Brooklyn Children's Museum is a great place to entertain kids, and admission is free on Wednesday afternoons through June 30th.

If you want to take a drive nearby, Travelocity recommends the Best Western Lake Placid Lodge upstate, with rates in late March or early April from just $99 a night.

Shaw Brown also points out cities like Philadelphia are "getting more popular with travelers. And it's great for New Yorkers because it's just ninety minutes away."

In downtown Philadelphia, rooms at the four-star Westin Philadelphia start at $135 a night at the end of March.
