New York Times Extends Boston Globe's Deadline

The Boston Globe says The New York Times Co. has agreed to extend the deadline for the newspapers' employees to make $20 million in concessions.

Globe spokesman Robert Powers says Friday's deadline for reaching an agreement has been extended to Sunday.

Leaders of the Boston Newspaper Guild, the Globe's largest union, had asked for an extension after discovering what they called a $4.5 million accounting error. The Guild said ownership had mistakenly counted the salaries and benefits of 80 people who had left their jobs at the Globe.

Powers says the Times Co. granted the extension because progress had been made in union talks.

The Times Co. has threatened to close the Globe unless it comes up with $10 million, or half of the union concessions.
