Identified since 1978 by the acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, the neighborhood has grown from its former days as a physical goods manufacturing district into a powerhouse of digital production. Mike Germano of Carrot Creative, Brian Lemond of Brooklyn Foundry, and Sam Lessin of Drop.io made the claim at Digital Dumbo, an event which serves as a monthly social summit for professionals in the digital marketing, new media, and communications industries.
Agency Spy writes, "Like the financial, theater, fashion, garment and other "districts" of New York, (Carrot Creative's Mike) Germano says the Digital Dumbo crowd are eager to put a flag in the ground. Despite being in Brooklyn, they contend that companies hoping to make a go at digital communications are most likely to succeed in the DUMBO neighborhood."
Over the past few years, it has welcomed companies like Etsy, Heeb Magazine, drop.io, Brownstoner Media LLC, and agencies including Big Spaceship, Brookyn Digital Foundry, and Huge.
Still, amid all the buzz, one company spent the day moving the last pieces out of its DUMBO office for their new space in Manhattan. Outside.In, a content and advertising platform specializing in hyperlocal news, made the move for a spot in the Flatiron district. In a tweet, a VP at the company said "yes, 'movin' on up' is exactly what we're doing…literally and figuratively," a reference to the theme song from The Jeffersons.
