Whoa, Baby

Fewer women than ever are having kids

Women are waiting to have kids or not having them at all more than ever before, according to new findings from the Census Bureau.

The number of women between the ages of 40 and 44 who do not have children has doubled in the last 30 years to 20 percent. Moms have an average of 1.9 kids each -- more than one child fewer than women of the same age in 1976.

Women with graduate degrees recorded the most births of all education levels. Of those who gave birth in the past year, 36 percent of them were separated, divorced, widowed or unmarried. Roughly 4.2 million women ages 15 to 50 participated in the survey titled "Fertility of American Women: 2006."
