Feds to Scrutinize Tour Bus Industry

NY lawmakers announce sweeping probe by NTSB

The National Transportation Safety Board will launch a broad investigation of the low-cost tour bus industry, two New York lawmakers said Sunday.

The announcement by Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Nydia Valazquez follows the March 12 crash on a Bronx highway that killed 15 people. NTSB officials say the driver was speeding before the crash.

Schumer said federal officials will review industry regulations and their enforcement.

The NTSB expects the review to be completed in six months. Schumer and Velazquez said legislation on amending regulations could follow.

A passenger claimed in a $200 million lawsuit that the driver was asleep at the wheel. He has said that he was well-rested and alert.
