An NYPD officer executing a search warrant was shot in the shoulder during a standoff with a gun suspect in Manhattan Tuesday, authorities said.
The suspect, a 35-year-old "violent repeat offender" with prior gun arrests who was on parole for narcotics busts, New York City Mayor Adams said at a press conference, also was wounded. He, too, is expected to survive.
The shooting was reported at an apartment complex on the Lower East Side.

According to officials, once cops got into the apartment in question, the wanted individual allegedly started firing shots at the officers, hitting an ESU ballistic shield. The officers, showing restraints and not returning fire, backed out of the apartment and the suspect barricaded himself inside by pushing a couch up against the door, police said.
The NYPD Hostage Negotiation team was called out to assist. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at the briefing that officers tried to work with family to get the man to leave the apartment. Eventually, he disengaged with law enforcement and, concerned a woman might have been inside the apartment, investigators opted to move in.

A short time later, police tactically entered the apartment and moved the couch. The suspect, who Tisch said never should have been on the streets, given his history, fired again. This time, he hit an ESU officer in the shoulder. Police returned fire, hitting the suspect.
The shooter is in custody. He is expected to survive, and the officer who was shot is expected to make a full recovery.
