What You're Doing Tonight 12/23

Hannukah gets funky, Christmas gets an "XXXmas tree," and Chicago's most badass brass band

IRREVERENT: Ron Tannenbaum (yep, the music critic) celebrates Hannukah with a snarkalicious evening of music called Good for the Jews at the Highline Ballroom. 8PM.

MERRY: The Bowery Poetry Club welcomes downtown performance artist Reverend Jen's Very Special Holiday, a sort of variety show-slam packed with treats like the Trachtenburg Family Players (who sing songs to a slideshow of found photos) and the XXXmas Tree (no idea what this is, but don't you kind of want to find out?). 9PM.

MESMERIZING: If you've never had your senses schooled by the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, get yourself to the Jazz Standard tonight. The seven-piece outfit from Chicago brings its funk-jazz-everything-else hybrid of awesomeness to a rare club gig that'll have your ears ringing (in a good way) until the new year. 7:30, 9:30PM.
