Tomorrow: Party at TG 170

The LES boutique is hosting designer Christian Joy and artist Jason P. Grisell, as they debut their new ready-to-wear collaboration. While Christian Joy is most readily recognized for her costume work with Yeah Yeah Yeahs front woman, Karen O, she also designs a wearable (meaning in the everyday sense of the word) and covetable line of womenswear. Grisell's contribution to the effort including stunning graphics printed on a variety of separates.

All the collaboration items sold tomorrow at TG 170 carry the exclusive label: When I Want You In The Night (which, might we add, is kind of a spectacular mantra to have on your back). Not only will both Joy and Grisell be at the boutique in person to celebrate the line's unveiling, Joy also gave us a sneak peek on one of her faveorite items up for sale: "Exquisite Corpse Dress: [the applied] technique was invented by the Surrealists." Well. That certainly makes us feel cooler.

The actual back story of the Christian Joy line all reads a bit like a John Hughes screenplay: Raised by born-again Christian parents in Iowa (birth name: Christiane Joy Hultquist), Joy met a theatrical rock star working at Daryl K's 6th Street boutique in the East Village (before the shop re-located to Bond St) and eventually found herself working collaboratively with Karen O, creating stage looks that have come to define O's iconic stage persona. Eventually working with talents as varied as Brit band the Klaxons and Rihanna, Joy has expanded her design repertoire to include edgy but wearable items for downtown city girls like oversized tees, open-back dresses and cocoon shaped tunics. Prices range from $50 for printed T-shirts to $350 for dresses.
