These guys killed it all week long at CMJ. Their new self-titled debut album also kills. If you are looking to get murdered in your ears, but in a good way, these Canadian lads should get it done. Propulsive, murky, vice-tight and even a little catchy, this is abrasive punk done right, which is a rare and beautiful thing.
Conor Oberst, Nov. 21 at Carnegie Hall, $30
It's unclear what's going on here. Conor Oberst isn't performing as Bright Eyes, but he's not billed as Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band either, so it's just him and a guitar? That could be pretty cool. Dude has A+ songs for days, so you likely can't go wrong here. But what songs will he play? Bright Eyes stuff? Solo stuff? He spent most of the year playing reportedly wild punk shows with band Desaparecidos (I say reportedly because the tour didn't hit New York. Ahem.), so maybe he'll get confused and play those songs acoustically? Suffice to say, the man has a lovely song called "I Will Be Grateful For This Day," and he should totally play it, considering when this show is.
Kyp Malone, Pictureplane, Motive, Nov. 23 at Brooklyn Night Bazaar, Free
The Brooklyn Night Bazaar is back, which is good news for us all. The food is great, the holiday shopping options are bountiful and the music is free. Up first is Kyp Malone, the wise old owl of TV On The Radio. On the side, he does atmospheric singer-songwriter type stuff with enough charm that you won't be too upset that Tunde Adebimpe didn't show up. Get there early for Pictureplane, who make make brittle electronic music that will chill your blood with dread. But don't worry, you can still dance to it.
