Tonight: Lord of the Rings in Concert, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Kimya Dawson

The Lord of the Rings trilogy’s second installment gets the live-orchestral-accompaniment treatment this weekend, with two performances of The Two Towers in Concert at Radio City. Maestro Ludwig Wicki will lead Switzerland’s 21st Century Orchestra (they specialize in film scores), the Collegiate Chorale and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus in bringing Howard Shore’s score to life as the film screens. That guy from IT wasn’t hyperbolizing: This really is epic. 7:30PM; also on Saturday.

We’ve said this before and we’ll repeat it: If you haven’t seen Eli “Paperboy” Reed do his thing live, you haven’t had the odd sensation of being transported back to 1960s Memphis by a white boy from Massachusetts. He headlines tonight at the kickoff of the funky Brooklyn Soul Festival at Bell House. Also on the bill: Lee Fields (who we most recently saw duetting with Sharon Jones in Prospect Park)

Would NYC native Kimya Dawson ever have landed on America’s radar without her Juno soundtrack? Hard to say. But she would have deserved to, certainly. One of the cleverest, least compromising ladies in lo-fi comes to the Knitting Factory  (also on the bill: Your Heart Breaks). 7PM.
