Tombs may not be a word on your mind this sunny Monday, but Brooklyn's resident masters of all things dark and noisy released a new single today that may propel you through the rest of the week.
Stereogum has the premiere stream of "To Cross The Land," the first release from the band's upcoming Path of Totality, out June 7 on Relapse.
While a lot of bands doing the atmospheric metal thing rely on sub-par production or dunk-tank reverb to shape their sound, Tombs manages to get a deft hi-fo treatment while retaining that air of the ethereal.
The crisp sound is thanks in big part to producer John Congleton -- a perfect choice for this band far beyond the pale. Congleton -- who's worked with everyone from Marilyn Manson to the Polyphonic Spree -- really knows how to shape a rhythm section around any musical situation to fit the aesthetic perfectly.
Here, Tombs spans everything from grind to sludge to drone in a beautifully composed track, almost painterly in its depth.
