Comedy writer, WFMU DJ and all-around national treasure Tom Scharpling has launched Low Times, his new long-form music interview podcast series.
Scharpling, along with Low Times founders Daniel Ralston and Maggie Serota, will have in-depth chats with "performers and personalities in the music world," according to the Low Times website. "Our guest reveal hidden talents, unusual interests and talk about their lives on and off the road." That website will also be a hub of content, and will feature news, columns, games and Danziggy, "the world's only doom rock comic strip."
"I've done some music journalism and the interview was always my favorite part of the process," says Serota, who has written for CMJ New Music Monthly, The Onion, AV Club, Radar, and NY Press. "So, this is my way to pass along that experience in a very unfiltered way. Also, I'd be a fool to turn down an opportunity to work on something with Daniel and Tom."
The debut episode, featuring talks with Wild Flag drum goddess Janet Weiss, Owen Ashworth of Advance Base and Catherine Popper of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, is available now.
Low Times seems to be a bit more serious than the farcical, hilarious chats Scharpling has with his partner in crime Jon Wurster, a.k.a. Philly Boy Roy, The Gorch and the frontman of Mother 13. But maybe Ronald Thomas Clontle, author of "Rock, Rot and Rule" can drop by anyway?
