Versace to Launch “Iconic” Collection for H&M

Donatella Versace has changed her tune when it comes to mass-retail collaborations, and has announced a collaboration with H&M on a collection she calls "very sexy" and "quintessential Versace."

Set to debut in New York on November 19, the line comprises 40 pieces for women and 20 for men, representing the classic silhouettes that have become "typical Versace," said H&M creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch in a release.

"Of course, there are going to be prints. Of course, there's going to be leather. Of course, there are going to be stars! Very glamorous, very rock-'n-roll," said Versace in the press release.

Versace wasn't always on-board with such an initiative, however. In 2008, she told New York Magazine the high-low collaboration trend in fashion wasn't for her:

"I respect everyone who does it," she said. "But the reason I didn't do it is because I work very hard to put the Versace line in the luxury section. I think to put the Versace line in H&M would confuse the brand."

Perhaps three years and the success of Lanvin's collaboration helped sway her. Not only did Versace sit down to gush about the project, she stepped out to take a bow after her menswear show in Milan yesterday wearing a black-leather-and-gold dress from the collection. According to a press release:

“I am thrilled to be collaborating with H&M and to have the opportunity of reaching their wide audience. The collection will be quintessential Versace, perfect for H&M and Versace fans everywhere,” says Donatella Versace.

Versace will also design a pre-spring collection, but, alas, it will only be available in countries where H&M e-commerce is available (read: not the U.S.).
