TJ Maxx Inks Deal on Massive 57th Street Location

In a deal estimated at close to $10 million, TJ Maxx signed on to expand into a massive third New York location on W. 57th Street.

According to the New York Post, the off-price retailer is expected to open for the holiday season in the 27,600-square-foot space within 250 W. 57th Street, which occupies the entire block of 57th between Eighth and Broadway.  The three-story TJ's entree to the neighborhood forced the building owners to relocate several other tenants and the Chase bank across the street, and the Gap will downsize into a smaller space next door.

While other off-price rival Filene's Basement recently closed one if its outposts, the expansion of TJ Maxx represents the success of some discount shops in the face of the recession, and even as things slowly perk up, we're guessing the new mega-location will draw some serious crowds -- especially with its proximity to the Columbus Circle shops.
