Prabal Gurung Offers Kaleidoscopic Take on Pre-Fall

After being awarded the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2010 and the CFDA's Swarovski Award for Womenswear in 2011, Prabal Gurung has officially stepped into the field with other designers who create four collections in any given year with the debut of his first pre-fall collection.

The collection was debuted in a video exclusively on Style.com, where the designer referred to the pre-fall season as "a huge opportunity to introduce new categories and more sportswear pieces." (Gurung is clearly eyeing expansion opportunities, and is already playing with lower-price pieces with the debut of tees in his Spring 2012 collection.)

The video features models wearing pieces from Gurung's prints-saturated pre-fall collection, as well as oversize sunglasses by Linda Farrow. Gurung described the process of creating the season's main print to Style.com:

"With this collection, I developed a particular print that I had taken a picture of. I had this printmaker in London that I was working with and it looks like a kaleidoscope ... We worked to develop the image more and more and more. I didn’t want it to have the same floral idea of my Spring collection -- if you look, it’s pretty from afar, but up close, it’s a little hard."

Gurung is clearly eyeing expansion opportunities, experimenting with lower-price pieces with the debut of tees in his Spring 2012 collection, as well as venturing into new partnerships with big brands like ICB. If trends persist, we're betting handbags and/or a secondary line can't be far off.
