Higher education has been a longstanding advocate of general eco-improvement, but it seems that fashion schools are starting to jump on board. Opening today, Parsons will unveil student-made garments created during a new course being offered at the school in partnership with Loomstate called "Zero-Waste Garment."
For the course, participating students were guided through a process of designing and producing clothes that incorporates every inch of fabrics and materials (according to the University, the accepted industry average of waste is currently at a whopping 15 percent).
Throughout the class, students were asked to document the process of "unlearning" wasteful production practices in daily journals. For the exhibit, each journal will be displayed alongside the students' completed patterns and garments.
The Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries are open Friday through Wednesday, 12:00–6:00 p.m., and Thursday, 12:00–8:00 p.m.
