“Hipsters, Hustlers and Handball Players” at the Met

Long before the Sartorialist, there was Leon Levinstein capturing strangers on NYC streets in their natural states.  Three decades of his work are on display at the Met through October 17.

The photographer's retrospective, entitled "Hipsters, Hustlers and Handball Players" looks at the characters in the city's ongoing performance, from rich socialites to degenerate loiterers, couples in love, prostitutes, children, style denizens and the down and out. The exhibition also brings up about 40 of the museum's own collection as a glimpse into the very seedlings of the genre, has blown up beyond almost anyone's expectations today, courtesy of the newly respected fashion blogosphere.
