One to Watch: Kelly Bergin’s California-Inspired Chic

Last year, Angeleno Kelly Bergin launched her eponymous collection intent on uniting her laid-back California vibe with an innate talent for super-precise tailoring.

The fruit of her efforts have an effortless but by no means sloppy appeal, from perfectly-proportioned pencil skirts to luxe, croc-stamped leather jackets.

"I'm inspired by how women, particularly my friends, live in their clothing, and take a lot of inspiration from the way they dress themselves day-to-day," Bergin told us.  "Everything we offer has to be functional, uncomplicated and easy to wear. It's intended to take some of the guesswork out of getting dressed."

Indeed, Bergin's collections are so carefully assembled that it seems any combination of her separates could work. "Having been raised in California definitely influenced my design philosophy, as pieces have to be relaxed enough to work in a casual setting, though many of them can easily be dressed up," she explains. "From a design perspective, I'm often inspired by the subtlety of minimal modern art, and look for ways to incorporate that balance of structure and ease in the line."

No piece better achieves that balance than a soft burnt orange overcoat with black leather piping and a simple open collar: equal parts bathrobe and gallery-opening.
