The massive gala held by the Met to benefit the Costume Institute each spring is always the biggest display of staggering red carpet fashion one sees all year. It also happens to be one of the most exclusive: Not only are tickets hard to come by and seriously expensive, but even spots on the red carpet for press are often highly competitive.
This year, for the first time ever, the Met is looking to open the pageantry to the public by live-streaming the red carpet parade for the public on May 7-- so everyone can ooh and aah at the spectacular gowns worn by celebrities and fashion It-girls attending the massive fete.
But lest you think this will be a simple live-shot operation, the press release indicates that the organizers have a lot planned for the two-hour event to keep the public entertained: Vogue's William Norwich and model/It-girl Elettra Wiedemann will host the red carpet live-stream, and will also apparently be interviewing luminaries like Carey Mulligan (the gala's co-chair), Miuccia Prada, and (drumroll) Anna Wintour. There will also be "special pre-taped segments" featured highlighting some of the history behind the two designers being honored by the exhibit itself: Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli.
As an added bonus, the hosts will apparently be asking some of the celebrities questions chosen from viewers casting submissions on Twitter using the hashtag #MetQuestions.
Bottom line: This is one red carpet event you won't want to miss -- the fashion's usually better than the Oscars (we said it), and the mix of celebrities and style icons is hard to beat. Tune in on May 7 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on metmuseum.org, vogue.com, or amazon.com.
