In theaters tomorrow, "Brave" tells the story of the precocious Princess Merida, who must rely on her archery skills to set right a terrible curse that's been unleashed on the kingdom.
Set in a mythical version of Scotland, Merida and the royal family's mode of dress has a decidedly King Arthur feel, from the jewel-toned dresses to the subtle gold details.
Echoing the shimmery gold motif on Queen Elinor's long-sleeve emerald gown (pictured above), brocade and baroque details were major themes on the catwalks this season.
We won't be half surprised if long, sweeping capes like Princess Merida's stage a comeback next fall.

Oscar de la Renta explored luxe baroque embroideries in navy and black on a number of princess-appropriate evening gowns. We think Princess Merida would approve of this look's daring silk chiffon neckline and winding vine motif.

Even the accessories at de la Renta had an old-fashioned, baroque vibe, including this black beaded choker necklace.

Granted, Merida seems to favor dresses in the film, but we think she'd have been an early adapter of the pantsuit in her day. Rodarte's gold metallic suit (inspired by Vincent Van Gogh) is finished with delicate baroque details.

If the court at Merida's castle ever decided to explore swimwear, we're certain Dolce & Gabbana's elaborate bejeweled onesies—which have a decidedly bold, baroque appeal—would be their first picks.

Inspired by the Versailles court, it's hardly surprising that Thakoon's spring collection felt especially princess-worthy, with swirling paisley motifs and splashes of metallic shimmer.
Aquilano Rimondi
Glimmering baroque graphics lent a super-luxe appeal to Aquilano Rimondi's streamlined silhouettes.

If she had an ultra-girly moment, we're certain Princess Merida would find lots to love in the elaborate brocade beadwork and sequin detailing in this frothy Dior look.

For a more modern spin on medieval motifs, Giambattista Valli added sequined flourishes to peplum-waist shell tops and metallic separates like this slim pencil skirt.
