Jason Wu Channels Helmut Newton for Spring ’13

Jason Wu may be best known for his "nice" evening creations (for the likes of Michelle Obama), but the designer explored truly naughty territory for spring.

Given that his career was jump-started by Michelle Obama sporting his pristine white evening gown to the 2004 inauguration, Jason Wu isn't a designer one typically associates with out-and-out sex appeal.

And yet, Jason Wu explored decidedly "naughty" territory for spring 2013, offering up alluring leather-and-lace creations that both revealed and concealed, like this white boustier dress with a sheer silk skirt finished in black lace (a fabric that has become something of a Jason Wu signature).

For his sexy-chic cocktail creations, Jason Wu took inspiration from a recent Helmut Newton exhibit at Paris' Grand Palais. Newton's influence was apparent not only in the stark black, nude and grey color palette, but in ruby red lipstick and dark, filled-in brows.

Wu's Helmut Newton concept was most apparent in the accessories: Here, a lingerie-inspired black boustier top with a pink lace pencil skirt was paired with sheer silk gloves.

Of course, there were still a few familiar Jason Wu staples: the perfect pair of high-waisted tap pants, for example, were rendered in rich navy satin and paired with a semi-sheer blouse embroidered with glittery flower clusters.

Even Wu's evening looks—always red carpet favorites among the celeb set—were given a kinky twist. Here, a navy halter dress with an embroidered bodice and dreamy sheer skirt was finished with a black leather harness.

Another "harnessed" evening look was finished with nude and silver sequins and a wild black tulle skirt.

For the most part, Wu's careful tailoring and romantic details kept the collection from tipping over into dominatrix territory. For example, an navy tulle gown with a strappy black bodice was finished in tiny silver stars.

PYT's with a flare for goth-chic (we're looking at you, Rooney Mara) will delight in Wu's racy lace-and-leather shirtdresses. This particular look featured paneled black lace and a waist-cinching belt.

Considering Wu's affection for all things "francais," we were pleased to see a few of his signature bow-collar blouses in the mix. Here, a sheer black blouse tops off tuxedo trousers with lacy racing stripes down either side.
