Five Ways to Look Sane in Crazy Pants

We were a little hesitant to embrace the crazy printed pants favored by brands like Dries Van Noten and Givenchy, but it's not as hard as it looks. Here's how to avoid looking like a lunatic.

We paired Vanessa Bruno's drapey Tricot Cashmere Jacket ($543 at La Garconne) to neutralize the bold black-and-white graphic pants by Devastee ($255 at Farfetch). We kept accessories simple -- a floral-embossed clutch (just $28) and copper wire earrings ($20) from Urban Outfitters--to avoid competing with the pants. With unembellished flats or sandals, this would be a terrific work-to-dinner look.

An easy brown and black fedora tops off one of our favorite "fall transition" ensembles: a white button-down blouse from Viktor & Rolf ($520 at La Garconne), tied over brown silk patterned trousers by Dries Van Noten ($1466 at Farfetch). We like the white leopard of Wendy Nichol's fabulous Pony Bullet Bag ($587 at La Garconne) juxtaposed against the soft neutral print in the pants. When the temperature drops, add a long black blazer.

This ensemble was built around Opening Ceremony's floral print jeans ($235 at Opening Ceremony): The pants are so bright that it's risky to put another color with it, so we stuck with Proenza Schouler's easy waffle cropped pullover in gray ($875 at Opening Ceremony), which works perfetly with the pants' higher waist. Pair with a simple leather satchel, or -- if you can get your hands on one -- a brown suede PS1 bag ($1995 at Proenza Schouler).

The dizzying "revolving dots" print on Marni's cropped trousers (just $200 at Marni) requires little more than a plain white tee and a jazzy chain necklace ($125 at Urban Outfitters) -- though we would hardly call Rachel Comey's fabulous double-pocket tee "plain" ($299 at La Garconne).

A fuzzy black sweater from Acne ($270 at Acne) is an interesting contrast to the texture of Loeffler Randall's swirling gold-print pants ($125 at Loeffler Randall) Try with black clogs, or add a pop of bright color with a faux-snake red watch ($28 at Urban Outfitters).
