First Look: Isabel Toledo’s Bewildering Payless Collection

We're huge fans of Isabel Toledo's quirky, elegant style, so we were more than a little disappointed by her recently-debuted Payless collection, featuring this poodle boot and other odd-looking shoes.

We're huge fans of Isabel Toledo's quirky, elegant style, so we were more than a little disappointed by her recently-debuted Payless collection, featuring such odd-looking footwear as this "poodle" boot for $59.99. Statement-making? Surely. But really, this seems to make the wrong kind of statement.

To Toledo's credit, she claims to have made an attempt to create chic shoes that the average woman could wear all over New York. We always love a simple black flat, and this $34.99 "pom pom" style might be our favorite of the collection.

Similarly, these $39.99 "High Ghillie" shoes are likely quite comfortable (and maybe even weather-resistent), but they are -- quite simply -- not that attractive. We're especially perplexed by the Timberland-inspired rubber sole.

The $34.99 "Ghillie Ballet" flat might be a perfectly chic, everyday option if not for the weirdly sporty clasp and that same ridged heel.

Again, a perfectly decent $54.99 black bootie, where the over-abundance of contrasting patent leather (a cap-toe?) and a jagged sole seems to take things in a not-so-savory direction.

This $54.99 platform black bootie would work wonders paired with one of fall's floaty floral dresses -- if not for that odd capped toe and the striped elastic showing on the sides.

Of all the shoes in the collection, this is likely our favorite: a chic black pump with an eye-catching red bow for $44.99. Alas, in terms of a wear-it-every-day essential, this one doesn't quite hold up.
