From Bryant Park to MAC & Milk, designers presented their ideas for how fall would take shape, creating a sartorial season marked by contrasts: seriousness and sex appeal, hype and simple sensibility.

LEATHER
Few things can ease the sadness over the end of summertime bliss like leather. Fall 2010 will be painted in leather, from classic bombers and tailored trenches to corset dresses, quilted vests and snatches of details on contrasting materials.

VELVET
Designers reveled in the softness of a rather old-fashioned (or, perhaps, '90s-inspired) fabric this season, with red velvet in particular making appearances at Altuzarra and Alexander Wang.

FUR
This season gave PETA a run for its money. Fur, in some form, cropped up on nearly every runway: Jason Wu gave his menagerie of toppers sorbet-colored dye jobs, while Ohne Titel created silky olive tiers over a leather trench.

GOLD
Fall will certainly glitter, if the runways were any indication: The gold for the forthcoming season is solid, tempering its glitz with a matte finish on everything from painted detail on a dress to full out pantsuits, evening gowns and everyday separates.

NEUTRALS
Neutrals are making the jump from spring to fall, led by Marc Jacobs' brilliant fall line, which was quite light in contrast to the conventional moody autumn palette. Elsewhere on the fall runways, neutrals highlighted sumptuous materials and detailing.

MIXED PRINTS
A slew of designers put a madcap spin on fall with an array of prints, piled on top of one another in gleeful harmony. Plaids and ethereal sheer metallics mingled under lace and dots at Rodarte, while Peter Som threw some metals and florals into the mix under mohair and Diane von Furstenberg drew on international inspirations to create her party outfits.

BELTED COATS
Voluminous coats promise to keep the well-heeled warm next winter, reigned in at the waist with varying degrees of cinched middles.

SHORTS
There's a certain kind of girl out there -- somewhere between stuffy and twee -- who can rock shorts. Shown in leather at Tibi and Tory Burch and elsewhere in silky drapes, shorts can soften a suit or toughen up a look that still shows off the legs.

PURPLE
The fall runways' big thrill is always the periodic splash of color -- in this case, a pansy-purple. It injected the same sophisticated punk appeal to fur, wool, silk and jersey on dresses and hats alike.

STRONG HIPS
If last fall was about strong shoulders, this upcoming season will be about strong hips. We started to notice nipped-in waist and slightly exaggerated curves, but it was Jason Wu's over-the-top skirt that got us thinking it'll gain traction.
