Band of Outsiders Fall 2011: Models Fall From Ceiling and '70s Après Ski

Scott Sternberg's presentations for his line Band of Outsiders have always been a New York fashion week highlight. One year a model dangled from a chandelier. Another year it was staged to look like a boarding school.

Those who feared Sternberg would lose that theatricality when he staged his first runway show this season had their fears put to rest when models dropped from the ceiling via ropes to start the show. Not even notoriously icy Anna Wintour chatting with 14-year-old blogger Tavi Gevinson front row could upstage a spectacle like that.

Spectacle aside, Sternberg put out some really great clothes for men and women this season (52 looks in all). He showed all of his three labels -- Band (a men's collection), Boy (confusingly enough his main line women's collection) and Girl (his less expensive women's line). Highlights included a dyed rabbit fur peacoat, a silk habotai floral asteroid print jumpsuit, and a perfectly cut double breasted oversized grey blazer. The overall look was 1970s ski wear -- the kind you might imagine a wealthy socialite wearing in Gstaad. That many of the women models were also sporting a single strand of Mikimoto pearls only added to that feeling.

You know you've put out some good clothes when all anyone wants to talk about when they leave the show is what they want to buy for themselves.
