Storecasting: Amoskea XX Opening on Orchard

There are two kinds of old-timey shops on the Lower East Side: the few left that are actually old, and the newcomers that cultivate a vintage-looking aesthetic. Falling into the latter camp is Amoskea XX, a boutique on the verge of opening in a sublevel space at 96 Orchard Street. For the unfamiliar, the label is an homage to Amoskea Manufacturing Company, a textile company that opened in the 1800s and closed down in the 1930s. Although Amoskea XX's look may be retro, its prices aren't: the brand's NYC flagship will peddle denim ($240 to $500) alongside costly waffle knit henleys, weatherproof parkas and coated-canvas bags. Denim fans should be excited: according to Denim News, the company was started by two vets of the Japanese textiles industry, and offers rare treats like seamless jeans ("To weave this kind of denim you need to either have very good friends in the industry or own a mill"). We knew Earnest Sewn would change the neighborhood; just look at what it's ushering in.
