Opening Announcement: Elsa to Take Over Hanger Bar

East Village: The old Hanger Bar space on East 3rd St. near Avenue B will reopen later this month as Elsa (not to be confused with its Avenue A neighbor Ella), part cocktail lounge, part boutique for bespoke men's suits. And as shown in the pictures above, they have done quite the renovation. It hardly resembles the somewhat dingy (but charming) Hanger with its graffitied bathroom, pool table, and creaky stools.

According to a statement from the owner, the space, inspired by a 1920's figure Elsa Schiaparelli, is meant to be an "elegant oasis...in a bygone New York unfettered by the outlaw of alcohol." The place looks pretty enough, but it's somewhat sad to see former dives in the area (Julep and Hanger) replaced by upscale newcomers. At least they're keeping Hanger's vision of combining shopping and drinking alive.
