Other than that, you might think Dr. John and Cyndi Lauper wouldn’t have much in common.
But Lauper, 57, started out in a Janis Joplin cover band. And for Memphis Blues, her latest studio album — and her 11th, by the way — she dove headfirst into classic blues, collaborating with the likes of B.B. King, Jonny Lang and Allen Toussaint, and nabbing a Grammy nomination and plum spot atop the Billboard Blues chart in the process. She even closed out the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival last month with a rousing performance, complete with second-line umbrella, something she called “a big, big deal.”
And so it is that Lauper and Dr. John are teaming up for a 15-date fall tour together called From Memphis to Mardi Gras, kicking things off in Orlando on Oct. 7 and stopping by the NYCB Theatre at Westbury on Oct. 19.
While we’re supremely disappointed this gig isn’t happening at, say, the Beacon (only because it means we have to Zipcar to L.I., and we’re lazy), we’re fully on board for the intimacy of the venue: The theater will be set up in the semi-round for the performance, meaning that the stage won’t spin, but that every seat is less than 60 feet from the stage.
Seems like the perfect place to soak up the synchronicity of two musicians who’ve long since paid their dues, and can focus on just having fun.
