The glut of vintage dresses.
Groovy Atlanta-based vintage chain the Clothing Warehouse opened its first store in New York this week, bringing a stash of sixties and seventies dresses, pristine vintage boots, Western button-downs, and retro T-shirts to Nolita. Scuffed red flooring, exposed brick, and blue accent walls lend an all-American vibe. Standout pairs of red, violet, and aqua boots are mixed with more common cowboy styles. Roughly equal numbers of men and women were browsing the shelves when we dropped in — a testament to the impressive selection of plaid shirts, fifties workwear, and leather jackets. Though the store carries some true vintage accessories — drawers full of coiled leather belts and fifties Lucite bangles — the sunglasses are all new (as are, amusingly, slap bracelets touting Paula Abdul and M.C. Hammer). But the real draw is the dresses, just in time to brighten up your spring wardrobe: sequined eighties frocks, kitschy sixties prints, and neon minidresses for around $60 apiece.
