Catherine Weatherup, owner of Milk & Honey offshoot Weather Up, tells us that on Saturday, she’ll open a coffee shop in her Crown Heights neighborhood. Glass Shop (located in a former glass workshop) is inspired by the shops where partner Francesco Agostino worked in his native Australia. “Coffee is a very theatrical thing back home,” he tells us, and to recreate that, he’ll be standing next to the subway-tiled bar in the center of the room rather than pouring from behind it. He’s also eschewing trendier roasters and going with Philly’s La Colombe, which supplies the Vongerichten restaurants, among others. He finds that it’s subtle enough to create Australian-style espressos ($2.50) and lattes ($3 for 8 oz.). No drip for now, but there’s also a selection of PG Tips teas and simple sandwiches (ham and egg, sardine) as well as egg specials in the morning. Agostino also designed the space using reclaimed woods — he plans to turn some driftwood into stools at a communal table and in warmer weather there’ll be a 600-square-foot garden in the back.
