Portion Control: “Save Half for Later” Campaign

Starting at lunch today, Sylvia’s Restaurant in Harlem will give out  containers to encourage customers to put away half their meals before they start eating.

As part of the “Save Half for Later” campaign, Mount Sinai School of Medicine and 12 other Harlem sit-down restaurants are encouraging their customers to eat healthier portions.

The restaurant-based portion control initiative began as an effort by Mount Sinai’s IMPACT Communities Diabetes Center and the East Harlem Diabetes Center of Excellence to prevent and manage obesity and diabetes.

Sylvia’s, located at 328 Lenox Avenue, is the newest restaurant to join the “Save Half for Later” campaign.

"For over a decade we have made strides to empower our guests to have a healthier lifestyle," said Tren'ness Woods-Black, the granddaughter of Sylvia Woods, who opened the restaurant in 1962.

Adults in East Harlem are at twice the risk of developing obesity or diabetes as adults in Manhattan, according to Mount Sinai Medical Center. Children from low-income families are twice as likely to be overweight compared with those from higher-income families.
