No La Tengo This Hanukkah

Hanukkah is canceled. Well, not exactly, but it kinda feels that way after learning that this year's festival of lights won't feature eight straight crazy nights of Yo La Tengo. The band has announced it won't be playing its annual Hannukah shows at Maxwell's this year.

Since they began in 2001, the shows had become a staple of the season, with fans of the indie-rock royalty treated to full-on variety-show parties featuring surprise guests, comedians and eight wild nights of the Hoboken-based band and friends rocking their menorahs on their home turf. All in the tiny 200-person space of Maxwell's.

Lines like "This ain't the season of the witch/ It's Hannukah, bitch" from "Hanukkah, Bitch" really put the crowd in the holiday spirit. This year though, there will be no "Hanukkah, Bitch," because the band will be in Japan.

Yo La Tengo begins a tour in support of its upcoming album, "Popular Songs," in Burlington, Vermont in September, and will play New York only one more time this year: Roseland on September 25, which the brand promises will "cram eight nights of nonsense into one evening."
