New York City is one of the best places to be if your female and single, a new study has declared.

The city came in third on's "2010: Top 10 Cities for Single Women" study, with Boston taking first place and Washington, D.C taking second.

The site, boasting to be the first online community for the powerful and single female, conducted the study in October 2009, using criteria its readers emphasized as important to them.

Amid the financial crisis, employment opportunities for the career-focused singleistas were a top factor. left out any major U.S. city with an unemployment rate above the 10 percent national average, disqualifying Chicago, San Diego, and Los Angeles, among others.

Career Editor Paula Santonocito, author of the story, writes that New York City might have come in first place if it weren’t for the high cost of living, which served as the benchmark, and 9.1 percent unemployment rate at the time of the study.

The study also analyzed the percentage of singles to the general population, ratio of women to men, access to an international airport, entertainment and social options, and healthy lifestyle factors.

Santonocito says the Big Apple is an “obvious” city of possibilities because of its vibrant scene all around. Giving it top status was New York City’s position in industries like fashion, theater, advertising, business, technology, and tourism. The nightlife and entertainment choices are countless, as every New Yorker knows.
