Need to Know: Widowspeak

Who: Widowspeak is a Brooklyn-based trio that features Molly Hamilton on vocals and guitar, Robert Earl Thomas on guitar and Michael Stasiak on drums.

What: Widowspeak makes beautiful mood music that is a mix of droning, drugged-up melodies, soft yet sinister vocals and beats that do just enough to keep the ship on course. They recently signed to the infallible local label Captured Tracks, home to indie favorites Wild Nothing, Blank Dogs and Beach Fossils.

When: The time is now for Widowspeak. They’ve informed me that there are a couple pending New York City dates on their calendar, so keep an eye on their MySpace profile. Also expect them to work out a tour in support of their upcoming release for all you folks who don’t call New York home.

Where: Hamilton and Stasiak grew up in neighboring towns in the state of Washington and met after kicking around in the Tacoma music scene. Three years and a move to New York later, Stasiak and Hamilton began to piece together a loose direction for the band. Shortly after Earl Thomas was brought into the fold and the Brooklyn-based Widowspeak was born.

Why: As previously mentioned, Widowspeak recently signed to Captured Tracks which is a label with a great ear for mining local lo-fi talent. Their self-titled debut album will hit streets on August 9 and the record of 10 intoxicating songs will include “Gun Shy” and “Harsh Realm.” Click on the song titles to get a vibe for one of the most promising young acts coming out of Brooklyn.

Also, it never hurts to record a sultry cover of a class like Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game."
