Who: The Poison Tree, a collective headed up by Brooklyn's Steve Salett (pictured), former fronter of King Of France. The deeply melancholic outfit opened for Beth Orton and (ex King of Francer) Doveman last night at (Le) Poisson Rouge, and will release their self-titled debut March 15 on Embarque, with a release show at Joe's Pub on March 23.

Reminds us of: Sparklehorse, even a little Velvet Underground

Who: Early Winters, a far-flung foursome of musicians who wrote their debut self-titled EP (out March 8) via Skype. The band is the side project of UK artist Carina Round, who's toured with Annie Lennox and James Blunt, and Canadian alt-country singer-songwriter Justin Rutledge. No firm NYC dates at this writing, but we're told they should be in town in April.

Reminds us of: A countrified Ingrid Michaelson

Who: Luke Rathborne, a Maine native now based in NYC who counts Devendra Banhart as a fan. His debut “double EP” (isn't that kind of like a single LP?) Dog Years comes out on Dilettante Records March 8; he's got a trio of shows planned to plug it at The Living Room on February 10 and 18, and Cake Shop on February 14, before heading to the UK and then SXSW.

Reminds us of: A slightly more chipper Elliott Smith, Tom Petty
