Geiger covers a lot of ground on the disc, pinging from catchy pop ditties to slow-burning folk ruminations to fuzzed-out rock, and making use of instruments you don’t hear much these days (let’s hear it for glockenspiel!).

Geiger’s all too aware of the trappings of the saturated scene he’s in -- see his hilarious indie-skewering bio on his MySpace page: “I only record in REMOTE CABINS in the WINTER in BROOKLYN with a CANADIAN COLLECTIVE as my backing band. I have overcome MANY TRAGEDIES!”

Geiger follows a different path. In a sea of disaffected indie material about malaise and pointlessness, what ultimately will set Hospital Ships apart is that the songs have a whole lot of heart.

Reminds us of: Geiger’s vocals are reminiscent of simple singing styles in the vein of Neil Young and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie. The songs hint at a veritable smorgasbord of influences, yet  resolutely do their own thing.
