Morning Couture Report

Handmade underwear at Christian Dior, stars at Armani Prive, and more

Anna Wintour may not have made an appearance, but John Galliano's showing for Dior was pretty much universally well-received as a pitch-perfect kick-off to three days of couture. Galliano really went back to Dior's roots for the show - the Bar jacket, corseted waists, tons of eyeliner—inspired by '50s archival photographs. But the biggest hit may have been the incredible handmade underpinning: Tons of looks were wonderfully bottomless (or boasted semi-sheer bottoms) revealing delicate bras, garters, and more.

We'll have a complete report on today's shows, but thus far the Giorgio Armani Prive show has probably attracted the most celebrities (Cate Blanchett, Emmanuelle Beart, and, er, Megan Fox), but today's highlight is of course the Christian Lacroix show. In the face of some serious financial difficulties, word is the designer has managed to pull of a spectacular collection. This from WWD's Twitter feed: "A 'Christian Lacroix Forever' banner was unfurled to a standing ovation at the end of the designer's show." Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel runway presentation isn't for a few more hours, but apparently the inspiration is ... "floating panels"? We'll just have to wait and see ...
