More Plaza Craziness: Astor Suite Hits Market for $55 Million

Against a backdrop of lawsuits concerning the quality of the finished product at The Plaza, Tommy Hilfiger listed his fixer-upper spread in the building for $50 million. It could be a tall task to get that much money in a building that's suddenly taking heat from all sides, but Hilfiger probably didn't know the Plaza bomb was going to explode in his face. Hey, former Esprit executive Jürgen Friedrich: what's your excuse? Friedrich bought the famed Astor Suite—the largest original apartment in the hotel/condo—for $25 million, and he's been trying to rent it out for $75k/month while he travels abroad. Well, apparently the trip is going to be longer than expected, because the Astor Suite popped up on StreetEasy on Friday with a price tag of $55 million, or $12,793 for each of its 4,299 square feet. The listing is being handled by broker Patricia Burnham, and there's an open house scheduled for this afternoon. It's not one of the newfangled penthouses, so maybe those horrid drainage grates are less of an issue.
