Man Killed On Way To Night Of Christmas Caroling

Pair hit by car crossing street; driver thought she'd hit reindeer

A man died and a woman is in serious condition after they were struck by a car as they crossed a street to go Christmas caroling.

Police said Stanley Domfort, 78, and Maria Shea were crossing a Middletown street Monday evening on their way to a nursing home. As they crossed the dimly lit section of the street, they were stuck by a car driven by Macbeth Dalmandetorres.

The couple were taken to a hospital, where Domfort was pronounced dead around 2 a.m. Tuesday. Shea was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with serious injuries.

Police said they've impounded Dalmandetorres' car. They added that the woman stopped her car immediately, thinking she'd hit a deer. A witness thought the same thing until seeing the two bodies in the street.
