That one-line description on the Pete’s Candy Store website—“Patsy Cline meets Tom Petty”—is astonishingly accurate when it comes to Olivia Mancini, who’s playing tonight.
Her musical presence has shape-shifted since she made up part of the rhythm section of the now-defunct Washington Social Club—she could be just Olivia Mancini, or she could be Olivia Mancini & the Mates, a semi-loose collective of friends who have been making music and mischief together since 2005.
In any event, the DC-based Mancini’s often heartbreaking voice, which can go from a rasp to a wail in half a second, setting your every hair on end, should sound fantastic in the tiny room at Pete’s. Catch her if you can.
